Create a PayPal Donate Button

The steps-by-step sequence to creating the HTML code for a PayPal Donate Button.

01. Login to PayPal and click on the Merchant Services tab

02. Click the ‘Useful Links’ ‘Buy Now Buttons’ link

03. Click the ‘Buttons’ ‘Donate’ link

Donors don’t need a PayPal account to make their donations

04. Click the ‘Create your button now’ link

05. There are three steps. You need to fill in the ‘Step 1:’ details

Steps 2 and 3 are optional for more advanced settings.

06. Step 1 - Choose what you want to ‘Accept payment for’

07. Step 1 - Give an Organisation name

The Organisation name is what appears on the PayPal payment screen as the ‘Purpose’ for the payment.
Use a Donation ID is if you want to identify which button the donation was made with.

08a. Step 1 - Click the little arrowhead to reveal the Customise options

08b. Step 1 - You can use your own graphics for the button

Provide a URL to the button image. Note the image is not updated to show on screen but will show (if the URL is corrrect) when the code is published.

09. Step 1 - Choose the Currency, Donation amount and email encoding

A plain text email has your email address in the code for the button. Potentially this could be gathered by Spam-bots.

10. Click ‘Create Button’

11. Select and copy the code created by PayPal

The ID No. is the Secure merchant ID selected instead of Plain text email address in Step # 09

12. You now have the option to use My saved buttons

13. Going to My Saved Buttons allows you to re-edit the button

14. The Actions available for a saved button

15. My Account > Profile > Selling Preferences > My Saved Buttons

The ‘My Saved Button’ link is in the My Account > Profile section

16. The PayPal button with a Customised Image pasted into my website page

17. Clicking the button takes you to PayPal

The ‘Purpose’ text is determined by what was entered in Step # 07
