How to make Address Book Sync with Google Mail without owning an iPhone or iPod Touch.
…And how to stop Google syncing when the option disappears from Address Book but the syncing with Google is still happening.
01. Duplicate com.apple.iPod.plist
1.1 Go to username/Library/Preferences
1.2 Duplicate [File > Duplicate or Cmd-D] com.apple.iPod.plist.
1.3 Rename to com.apple.iPod-orig.plist to avoid confusion later
1.3 Open com.apple.iPod.plist in BBEdit [or similar editor that can handle plists]
02. Locate the Family ID number
2.1 You need to change the Family ID number. This can be tricky when owning mutiple iPods.
2.2 In my case, it had to be the Family ID of the 5G-iPod Video. It would not work if I changed the ID of the 3G-Nano or 2G-Shuttle.
2.3 The Family ID for my 5G-iPod Video is 6
2.4 [The Family ID for my 3G-Nano is 12. The Family ID for my 2G-Shuffle is 130]
03. Change the Family ID number to 10001
3.1 Change the Family ID number to 10001
3.2 Save the changes.
04. WARNING - Back up before you Sync your Contacts
4.1 When you next Sync your contact you will no doubt get loads of conflicts. It is possible to completely wipe out all your Address Book contacts. I know, I did it.
4.2 Backup your Address Book and Google Contacts BEFORE syncing
05. To turn ON Synchronize with Google
5.1 Launch Apple’s Address Book
5.2 Click Address Book > Preferences…
5.3 Click the appropriate box to Tick Synchronize with Google
06. Agree to Access Google Contacts
6.1 Click the Agree button to continue
07. Enter your Google Acoount
7.1 Enter your Google Account name [yourname@gmail.com]
7.2 Enter your Google Password
7.3 Click OK
08. Sync your Contacts
8.1 Click Apple > System Preferences… > MobileMe > Sync
8.2 Check that Contacts is Ticked for Syncing
8.3 Click the Sync Now button on this dialog or from the menu bar is if its status is Ticked to be shown there.
09. WARNING - The next iPod Sync will revert the Family ID, making Google ‘Invisible’
9.1 The next time you sync the iPod with iTunes, the Family ID will be reset.
9.2 This means that the Syncronize with Google option is no longer shown in Address Book
9.3 BUT Syncronization is still active if it was Ticked prior to becoming invisible
10. To turn OFF Synchronize with Google
10.1 If you have not synced the iPod with iTunes, go to Address Book > Preferences… and unTick Synchronize with Google
10.2 If Synchronize with Google is invisible: Repeat steps 1–5 to make the option reappear.
10.3 unTick Synchronize with Google
